orky, a member of the northern resident community, was caught in port hardy, british columbia in 1967. some sources say that his capture was not planned, but nonetheless he was sold to marineland of the pacific in california.
marineland’s curator at the time mentioned that orky was ‘quite a handful’ and told how he was scared of him. he recalled an incident in which he was in the tank with orky, and orky began to push him around. he escaped, and orky continued to be used to in water interactions.
in 1968, two new orcas arrived at the park, and orky was placed with corky. however he was not with her for long, as he died in 1969 at age 7, after only three years in captivity. his reported cause of death is pneumonia.
